LOOKING FOR 1000 ENGINEERS, Chapter 3: Robotic Avatars in Irapuato México

Updated: Dec 5, 2022

Avatar robots critical pieces in the connection of the future society.

The era of robots in everyday activities and economic sectors is getting closer to being a reality. The different types of robots at a global level interact with human beings, automate processes and streamline industrial, health, and retail sectors.

In Mexico, robotics is booming at an academic and theoretical level. In addition, the Latin American country imports industrialized robots the most and the fourth in the world according to the World Trade Organization. Today, 223 thousand of students graduate from STEM careers each year.

In the next 20 years, we will see cities flooded with machines carrying out different tasks, such as cleaning, serving coffee, acting as tour guides, hospital assistants, or loading suitcases at the airport.

What is a robot?

Robots are machines with an intelligent systems with machinery or software that can automate processes and tasks. These can be different types of robots since they can be from a robotic arm or even a humanoid figure.

Mexico is the fourth exporter of light vehicles and the sixth producer worldwide, the fifth global producer of auto parts, the most competitive in America for aerospace manufacturing, the eighth exporter of medical devices, ninth place worldwide in the installation of robots for the industry.

We met INBIODROID, who developed PROMETHEUS, an avatar robot (a multipurpose robot controlled remotely by a human being) and who, out of 99 teams from all over the world that registered in 2018, was selected among the 17 finalist teams, being the only team Latin American from 10 countries to compete in front of a live audience of over 2,100 people during the two-day event. The physical robotic avatar technologies were tested in specific tasks that tested their ability to interact with humans, explore new environments, and employ specialized skills. The event was also broadcast live, allowing thousands to share the advancements in this emerging technology area.

Although they were not on the podium, if they were among the 10 best teams in the world that developed this type of technology, there is very little left to perfect it. They undoubtedly demonstrated the capacity and talent that they have within their development team.

Let's see the conversations we had with Juan Carlos Díaz Garmendia, Founder & CEO of Inbiodroid:

With the investment in new technologies such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and 3D printing, the new generations of types of industrial robots will allow applications that positively impact the industry, commerce, and consumption.

Classification of the different types of robots

The different types of robots can be classified by their functions and the areas in which they perform. Among the main sectors that use robots, medicine, industry, space, and consumption stand out. Depending on their design, these types of robots are used to perform automated tasks, merchandise loading, research, and other tasks that streamline processes in each industry.

This is the classification of the different types of robots:

  • Industrial robots

  • Service robots

  • Space robots

  • Military robots

  • Medical robots

  • Avatar robots

“Avatar and telepresence technology will be an essential part of human progress for decades to come,” said David Locke, Executive Director of the ANA Avatar XPRIZE. Via ANA Avatar XPRIZE.
